On 28 July 1865, a climbing party comprising the British climbers E.N. Buxton, F.C. Grove and R.J.S. McDonald, accompanied by the guides Jean-Pierre Cachat and Michel Payot, reached the summit of theAiguille de Bionnassay (4,052 m). They followed what is now known as the standard route.
